Quick Answer
Businesses on Staten Island are New York City businesses. Sole proprietors and partnerships may owe the NYC Unincorporated Business Tax, corporations face city corporate taxes, and most retailers collect New York State and City sales tax (8.875% combined).
Unincorporated Business Tax
The UBT applies to many self employed people and partnerships doing business in the city, at a 4% rate on taxable business income above an exemption amount. Smaller businesses may qualify for credits that reduce or eliminate it. Employees on a W-2 do not owe it.
S corporations and C corporations
New York City does not recognize S corporation status the way the federal government does, so S corporations generally file a city corporate return. This is one of the most missed items for new Staten Island owners.
