Yes. Through a wage levy (wage garnishment), the IRS can require your employer to send part of each paycheck directly to them. It continues until the debt is resolved or the levy is released. Acting quickly matters: payment plans, hardship status, and other options can stop or prevent a garnishment, but only if you respond before or soon after it starts.
Most Offers in Compromise take 6 to 12 months for the IRS to review, and complex cases can take longer. The IRS suspends most collection activity while a complete offer is under review. A thorough, well-documented application is the best way to avoid delays and rejection.
Federal tax liens no longer appear on the three major credit bureau reports, so a lien does not directly lower your credit score. However, a lien is a public record, and lenders, landlords, and business partners can still find it when you apply for a mortgage, loan, or lease. Resolving the underlying debt is the only reliable way to clear it.
File them, even if you cannot pay the balance. The failure-to-file penalty is far harsher than the failure-to-pay penalty, and the IRS can file a substitute return on your behalf that ignores deductions you are entitled to. Getting transcripts first shows exactly which years the IRS expects.
