Tax Preparer Near Great Kills and Eltingville, Staten Island

Staten Islanders pay New York State and New York City income tax. Here is what South Shore filers should know.

Staten Island South Shore tax guide

Quick Answer

Staten Island is part of New York City, so residents of Great Kills, Eltingville, Annadale, Huguenot, Prince's Bay and Rossville pay New York State income tax and New York City resident income tax on one combined state return. Our offices at 4017 Richmond Avenue and 16 Driggs Street prepare these returns every day.

New York City resident tax

The city tax is figured on the same New York return, with its own rate schedule. Make sure your employer is withholding city tax as well as state tax, especially after moving onto the Island from New Jersey or another county.

Working in New Jersey

Many Staten Islanders cross the Outerbridge or Goethals for work. If you pay New Jersey tax on those wages, New York generally gives a resident credit against state tax. That credit generally does not reduce New York City tax, which surprises people.

Credits worth checking

  • New York State and New York City child and dependent care credits
  • Empire State child credit
  • New York City school tax credit
  • College tuition credit or deduction

What to bring

  • All W-2s and 1099s
  • Last year's federal and New York returns
  • Childcare provider name and tax ID
  • Tuition statements (Form 1098-T)

General information only, not advice for your specific return.
