IRS Installment Agreement: Paying Taxes Over Time
An installment agreement is an IRS payment plan for a balance you cannot pay at once. Short term plans give up to 180 days; long term plans spread payments monthly. Interest and the failure to pay penalty continue, at a reduced penalty rate while the plan is in place.
Plan types
- Short term: up to 180 days, no setup fee.
- Long term (streamlined): individuals owing $50,000 or less in combined tax, penalties, and interest can usually apply online with minimal financial disclosure.
- Larger balances may need a financial statement (Form 433-F or 433-A).
Why it matters
An approved or pending agreement generally stops new levies. Missing payments or new balances can default the plan.
Common questions
- Do I still owe interest on a payment plan?
- Yes. Interest continues until the balance is paid in full, so paying faster lowers total cost.
